Project Description: |
Shands at UF in Gainesville has applied to the Forida Department of Health to establish a state-approved Level 1 Trauma Center. North Florida currently has one Level 1 Trauma Center at Shands Jacksonville and an additional trauma center is needed to serve the needs of North Central Florida and the Panhandle. The Shands at UF Emergency Center, inpatient units and ancillary services will be remodeled and enhanced to facilitate the develoment of the trauma center. With the anticipated approval of the Level 1 Trauma Center, Shands projects an increase of approximately 1,600 additional trauma patient admissions annually, principally transfers from outlying hospitals were patients are stabilized initiatlly. Shands at UF is a regional resource for these hospitals and this role will grow with the development of the trauma center.
In addition to the renovations and staffing to meet designation criteria by the Department of Health, Shands at UF will need to add a CT scanner in the trauma center, which is the most important diagnostic tool for the most seriously injured. The current CT capability is fully utilized and new procedures will be performed for trauma center patients.
This project fulfills a statewide interest. Shands at UF serves the entire State of Florida, caring for patients from every county and providing services not avaiable elsewhere through patient requests, physician referrals, hospital to hospital transfers and government requests. Shands at UF is a safety-net hospital and its ability to meet Florida's needs will be significantly enhanced through the Level 1 Trauma Center. |
