CBIRS Request 9

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #9
Community Residentual Substance Abuse Treatment

Requester: Mary Lynn Ulrey, CEO Organization: Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office, Inc, (DACCO)

Project Title: Community Residentual Substance Abuse Treatment Date Submitted 1/6/2004 10:33:25 AM

Sponsors: Miller

Statewide Interest:
Treatment in the Community for Pregnant/Postpartum substance abusing women, for non-violent drug offenders and for Hillsborough residents is unavailable for those who are plagued with the illness of addiction. Each month the waiting list for male services is 20 and for females it is 27. This translates to a man waiting about 6 weeks and a woman about 2 months for admission. On parity with chronic illnesses, addiction like cardiac disease or diabetes must receive the opportunity for treatment, stabilization and recovery when possible. Addiction is the root cause for child abuse, domestic violence, costly fetal alcohol syndrome and jail overcrowding, but continues to be seen as a social problem rather than the formidable medical disease that it is.
