Project Description:
A mental health and substance abuse program for youth under the age of 18 identified by the Department of Juvenile Justice and assessed and classified as low to high risk for public safety. The program will provide an array of comprehensive services including mental health and substance abuse evaluation and treatment; counseling; family therapy; crisis intervention; suicide prevention, etc. Mental health and substance abuse problems have impacted negatively on our youth involvement with crime. The involvement of our youth with the juvenile justice system is severe in the minority inner-city yout population. The destruction of our youth becomes more apparent as the crime rates and drug use increase. Our youth at the same time are without alternatives including treatment, which may be a primary source of their anti-social and criminal behaviors. Thes yout without proper intervention, become the inmates in adult prison systems. Their criminal activity increase as they move into adulthood rather than decrease. The goal is family stability and basic education achievement.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The program will focus on early intervention and prevention. Its aim will be to divert youth from being committed to a long-term involvement in the criminal/juvenile justice system. Participants who successfully complete the program will be able to lead socially acceptable lifestyles. In addition, government funds will not need to be directed on a long-term basis to these youths.
