Statewide Interest: |
The Legislature recognizes that operating multiple campuses to serve students is more expensive than operating a traditional one campus university. FAU operates seven (7) campuses located along 150 miles of coastline. This distributed campus model costs 5.4 million dollars more a year to operate than a single campus system. In order to provide the same quality of service to students at all campuses, an adjustment to FAU's appropriation is warranted. |

Project Description: |
Florida Atlantic University provides higher education services to undergraduate and graduate students on six campuses strategically situated along more than 100 miles of Florida's southeastern coastline. The campuses are located in Davie, Dania Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Jupiter and Port St. Lucie. Four (4) of them (Davie, Ft. Lauderdale, Jupiter and Port St. Lucie) are operated in close coordination with FAU's community college partners.
Benefits: 1. The distributed campus system gives place-bound students the opportunity to earn university degrees while continuing to meet family and employment obligations. It also eliminates the need for students to incur housing expenses. 2. It provides easy access to baccalaureate degree programs to community college students through well-developed 2+2 articulation programs. 3. It expands FAU's presence throughout its service area and enhances the University's teaching, research and community outreach capabilities.
Costs: The distributed campus system results in higher overall instructional costs of about 10 percent because of duplicative administrative expenses, increased faculty travel time, and the need to provide physical facilities, utilities, police protection, library resources and other services at all of the campuses. These increased costs could cause services to be compromised on some campuses.
Solutions: 1. FAU is requesting $5.4 million to cover the increased costs of serving students through the distributed campus system. 2. The higher funding requirements of the distributed campus system can be met through a fully funded enrollment plan that is approved by the Board of Governors, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor. The current enrollment growth model allows an extra 5 percent for distributed expenses to serve new students. |
