Project Description: |
The importance of the public health workforce to the state of Florida has never been greater. With numerous recent hurricanes and biological terrorism problems, and the increasing threat of Avian flu, the infrastructure for public health in Florida needs to be strengthened. Public health officials deal with drinkable water, diseases, contaminated foods, emerging viruses, anthrax and decontamination of buildings, among many other public health issues affecting Floridians in times of catastrophes and health pandemics. Florida currently has a shortage of public health professionals and many workers are not adequately trained to deal with the complexities of public health issues they face. Moreover, many of the individuals currently employed in the public health workforce are reaching retirement age. Estimates indicate that 30 - 50% of the public health workforce will retire within the next four years - a loss of 5000 - 7500 public health workers. Currently, the pipeline has inadequate numbers of individuals to replace them. Combined with the rapid growth of Florida, the needs in the public health sector are significant and critical to this state and must be addressed now before disaster strikes. |
