Project Description: |
This interdisciplinary program has the following major aims: 1) initiate a community-wide effort to raise awareness of the obesity epidemic and its medical and economic impact on Florida; 2) establish robust screening tools and practical primary intervention tools for obesity for use by primary care providers; 3)develop a repository of clinical knowledge for obesity-related medical conditions; 4) disseminate knowledge, clinical strategies and algorithms for treatment of obesity-related medical comorbidities among health care providers; 5) monitor state-wide outcomes of medical and surgical treatment of obesity; 6) blueprint these efforts and lessons learned to other communities in Florida. This evidence-based and outcomes-driven approach will capitalize upon the University of South Floirda's current strengths within its colleges of medicine, nursing and public health. This program will provide funding for public awareness campaigns, obesity screening and prevention information kits, workshops and seminars for health care providers, printed and web-based informational material and electronic database to track outcomes screening and prevention. This scientifically developed approach will provide unique health gains for Floridians and will lay the foundation to the greater effort of obesity prevention for the next two decades. |
