Project Description:
This funding would allow collaboration with Tallahassee Community College Dental Hygiene Program, the Leon County Health Department, the Gadsden County Health Department and the Area Health Education Center Program (AHEC) to develop a learning program for dental students to provide dental services for underserved children and adults in Leon and Gadsden Counties. Many people in these counties are dramatically underserved in oral health needs. Oral health is integral to general health. Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease- 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever. Employed adults lose more that 164 million hours of work each year due to dental disease or dental visits. Most adults show signs of periodontal or gum diseases. Recent reseach shows an association between chronic oral infections and heart and lung diseases, stroke, and low-birth weight, premature births.
