Project Description: |
This project has been funded every year since 1998. The funds will continue to be used to provide staff and staff hours to serve patients for the following services: treatment of common injuries and illnesses; obstetrics and gynecological exams and follow up care; health screenings; laboratory services; health and nutritional counseling; behavioral health services; dental care; school/college physicals; immunization, and social services. Basic school health services are also provided at the center which includes the following: meeting emergency health needs, nursing assessments, assistance with medication administration, and preventive health education on tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse.
This project's goals are consistent with the department of Health's mission & goals.
Treatment provided by the project helps to improve the health of the population and allows patients early access to primary care services that are at times not affordable for the uninsured and underinsured population. Services under this project also target a high number of economically disadvantaged students. The basic school health visits and preventive education provided throughout the school year are at times the students' only access to health care services. Some of the major responsibilities/priority issues outlined by the Department of Health are to: "prevent and treat infectious diseases of public health significance" and to "facilitate the placement of health care providers in medically underserved areas" These major responsibilities are all fulfilled in this project request. In addition, the Department of Health has made it a priority to respond to disparities in racial and ethnic outcomes
