Alzheimer's Safe Return Act (Law Enforcement Training)

Requester: Gloria Smith Organization: Alzheimer's Association

Project Title: Alzheimer's Safe Return Act (Law Enforcement Training) Date Submitted 1/3/2006 10:11:40 AM

Sponsors: Crist

Statewide Interest:
Keeping person with Alzheimer's SAFE in our community and training law enforcement the issues of Alzheimer's: wandering, successful search techniques, communication tips, hurricane preparedness, shoplifting, indecent exposure, false reporting, victimization, homicide/suicide, and abuse/neglect. There are an estimated 450,000 Floridians living with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease affects an individual's sense of time, place, motion and direction. Wandering is a life-threatening behavior associated with Alzheimer's disease and memory related disorders that results in the afflicted individuals becoming disoriented and wandering from their protective environment and becoming lost. The Alzheimer's Association estimates that 60% of all persons living with Alzheimer's disease will experience wandering during their illness and many will do so repeatedly. If a wanderer is not found within 24 hours, nearly 50% will suffer serious injury or death. The "Alzheimer Safe Return Act" program will help minimize the time that the person with dementia is lost. It saves law enforcement officers considerable time searching for lost people and time trying to coordinate the return of lost people. As a result this program will not onely save lives, but will save law enforcement manpower and state money. In addition, the program trains law enforcement officers on other behaviors they may encounter with a person with Alzheimer's and how to handle the situation with care and dignity towards that individual.
