Project Description:
These funds would increase the number of physicians working in Florida and would allow UF to form a Regional Residency Training Network with the Veterans Administration hospitals in Orlando, Gainesville, West Palm Bch, and St. Petersburg. This network would provide additional sites for residents in adult and geriatric medicine, general medicine, surgery and the mental health fields to produce more health care providers for Florida. Data show that there are insufficient numbers of physicians in Florida to provide high quality health care for the rapidly growing and continually aging population of citizens and that the majority of residents practice in the community/state where they received their residency training. Residency slots are prescribed by a national formula and Florida has fewer slots than predicted by the formula. The VA system has the ability to create new residency positions at these sites. Support for training of this program would greatly enhance Florida's chance to obtain more residency slots and could train at least 20 additional residents at each site this year. This would have a significant impact on the number of trained physicians who would be available to enter the physician workforce in Florida.
