Charlotte Harbor and Myakka River restoration

Requester: Dave Moore, Executive Director Organization: Southwest Florida Water Management District

Project Title: Charlotte Harbor and Myakka River restoration Date Submitted 1/11/2006 11:38:29 PM

Sponsors: Bennett

Statewide Interest:
Charlotte Harbor is a District SWIM Priority Water Body, and has been declared an Estuary of National Significance by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The bay and its watershed cover more than 4,400 square miles and is home to more than forty species of animals listed by the state as either endangered, threatened, or of special concern. Charlotte Harbor is Florida's second largest open water estuary covering 270 square miles. It is considered to be one of the most productive estuarine systems on the west coast of Florida and is a world-class destination for recreational fishing. The overall economic impact to the Charlotte Harbor community of both recreational and commercial fishing, as well as a growing shellfish aquaculture industry, is estimated by the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council to be in excess of one billion dollars annually. Furthermore the Peace River serves as the primary drinking water supply for over 300,000 people. Protecting Charlotte Harbor from degradation and improving water quality is critically important to the health of the estuarine system and a prime objective of the project.
