Drug Free Youth in Town

Requester: Barbara Zohlman Organization: Drug Free Youth In Town

Project Title: Drug Free Youth in Town Date Submitted 1/13/2006 8:38:27 AM

Sponsors: Bullard

Statewide Interest:
D-FY-IT serves a compelling state interest by providing a cost-effective and efficient mechanism to prevent current and future generations from choosing a destructive and costly drug-using path. The cost of one school is exponentially less then the cost of treating one child who becomes addicted to drugs.

Project Description:
D-FY-IT is currently in 54 public middle and high schools in Dade County with a projected enrollment in the 2004-2005 school year of over 7,000 student members. In addition, D-FY-IT impacts literally tens of thousands of students at each of these schools. Our members are drug-free and willing to prove it by submitting to an initial drug test and subsequent random drug screenings. Membership is strickly voluntary. Students participate in community service activities such as providing food for the needy, cleaning up our beaches, or assisting other charitable organizations. Many area merchants recognize the efforts of our students by providing them discounts on various consumables and services. Our membership is comprised of students from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds (70% are minority students). Our program has received significant recognition from the Florida Department of Children and Families Best Practices in Substance Abuse Prevention in 2003 for the State of Florida. D-FY-IT has received funding for the past 7 cycyles; in 1997-1998 we received a $600,000 appropriation through the Department of Juvenile Justice. In 1998-1999 we received $425,000 through the Department of Health. And we received $500,000 in both budget years 99-00 and 00-01 (which included a joint grant for Dade and Broward Counties)

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Increased knowledge of alcohol, tobacco, drugs and other health related topics. A decrease of favorable attitudes toward drug use in middle and senior high schools in Miami Dade and Broward Counties. Ninety percent or higher drug-free test rate for over 7,000 D-FY-IT students in Miami Dade COunty. Last year over 107,000 hours of community servoce by D-FY-IT students benefited the community overall. Finally, a direct increase in parental involvement in D-FY-IT parent clubs. Additional funding will grant the D-FY-IT program the opportunity to expand outside South Florida, where prevelence of drug and alcohol abuse is high. This will allow more Forida youth to participate in this successful program that has been reviewed by the state's evaluators and proven to work.
