Project Description:
Funding will be used for major structural renovations and mechanical overhauls that will extend the bridge's life for up to 25 years. Built in 1926, the Platt Street Bridge is currently 80 years old, but was originally designed for a 50 year service life. It carries over an estimated 33,000 vehicles a day between vital community engines such as the downtown business district, the University of Tampa, the Tampa Convention Center, the Garrison Channel Seaport District, Tampa General Hospital, South Tampa and MacDill Air Force Base. The bridge is also designated as a hurricane evacuation route. The Platt Street Bridge is functionally obsolete, and suffers from frequent mechanical and electrical malfunctions that are a risk to the motoring and pedestrian public. Should the bridge fail to operate, the U.S. Coast Guard has the authority to direct that it stay continuously open to maintain waterway navigation, impacting emergency services and economic concerns.
