Project Description:
Meals on Wheels, Etc. is a private non-profit agency providing nutrition and other support services to elderly residents in Seminole County. In the past year the agency has expanded their operation to include a 5,300 sq. ft. production kitchen which prepares and delivers fresh meals daily to seniors, Headstart programs in Osceola and Seminole Counties, private children daycares and adult daycares. All meals meet the guidelines for Required Dietary Allowance. The kitchen facility was made possible through community support. Total cost of Kitchen improvements/equipment is $346,585. A $250,000 kitchen leasehold improvement loan was authorized by the agency's Board of Directors in 2004. The balance due now is $185,000. This past year Meals on Wheels, Etc. became Seminole County's Disaster Feeding Kitchen for public safety workers. We also contracted with the American Red Cross and Heart of Florida United Way/211 for meals for Katrina evacuees. The kitchen is licensed and inspected by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, Division of Hotels and Restaurants, and is also monitored by the area agency on aging for compliance with the Older American Act regulations and guidelines. A licensed dietician provides menu planning/ compliance and safe food handling. The kitchen facility is currently producing approximately 2,000 meals/day and has the capacity to produce 10,000 meals/day. The following meals were recently provided for disaster relief in 2005: American Red Cross: 782 sandwiches/day during the month of September for Katrina Evacuees Heart of Florida United Way/211: 1,725 hot dinner meals and 400 Shelf-stable meals during the month of October for Katrina Evacuees Seminole County 734 hot meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) on 10/24 for County Public Safety Workers during Hurricane Relief call down

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? Yes
If yes, which declared disaster? Meals provided to Katrina evacuees & Seminole County Public Safety workers
If yes, which year? 2005

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Upon payment of the initial kitchen equipment/improvements, the agency will have the ability to provide additional senior meals to at-risk seniors, enabling them to remain independent and maintain a healthy diet. Additionally, the disaster relief component, which was successful in 2005, will continue to concentrate on refining policies and procedures, menus, and negotiating the best possible pricing from food vendors while providing a quality meal at a low price for disaster relief recipients.
