Project Description:
The Lower Charlotte Harbor, a priority waterbody, includes Pine Island Sound, Matlacha Pass, Ding Darling, Estero Bay and the Caloosahatchee Estuary. These waterbodies include parts of Lee and Charlotte counties. The Lower Charlotte Harbor Watershed Initiative is a combination of projects that have multiple benefits, but all fall within the general goal of restoration and water quality improvements in the Lower Charlotte Harbor area and its receiving coastal waters. The project components include retrofitting existing stormwater systems to provide water quality and flood mitigation improvements; restoring riverine flow ways; restoring flow to natural systems that supply water to our aquifers; creating stormwater retention; detention and filter marshes to remove impurities going to the river and to improve the hydrology associated with freshwater flows tothe river; restoring the natural systems of our estuaries to improve shellfish and fish habitat; and associated resource monitoring and assessment. The focus of these projects is to provide hydrologic and water quality improvement to the Lower Charlotte Harbor estuaries. These projects are implemented through cooperative partnerships with federal, state, county and city governments, universities and nonprofit organizations.
