This project is contained within the Fort Lauderdale Central Beach CRA District and meets the state legislative policy contained in Section 163.335 that coastal resort and tourist areas which are deteriorating due to inadequate street layout could be revitalized and redeveloped in a manner that will vastly improve the economic and social conditions of the community.

Project Description:
The Central Beach Area was renovated in 1986. Since then, the City of Fort Lauderdale has seen a re-birth of the Central Beach Area. This newer project, Streetscape Phase I, will alter the intersection of Las Olas Boulevard and AIA as well as the east most end of Las Olas to allow for a wider sidewalk and trees on the south side of Las Olas as well as landscape improvements. The City hopes to beautify and make streetscape improvements along AIA and at the gateways to Fort Lauderdale Beach. The Beach Redevelopment Advisory Board and the Central Beach Alliance support this project.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The current area, in the heart of Broward County's tourism industry, is not pedestrian friendly and years of wear and tare has taken a toll on the landscape. These planned improvements will make the area pedestrian friendly and beautify the key gateway to Fort Lauderdale Beach. The private sector responded to the previous beach transformation with several development plans for major renovations and new construction. This response resulted in substantial additional sales tax dollars for the State of Florida. A similar response is expected with these planned improvements.
