This funding will support a new workforce program designed to train teachers, researchers, IT specialists, engineers, and technical support staff in the newly emerging field of Regenerative Medicine. This workforce program will develop adult stem cell based therapies for a wide variety of human disease including cancer, neurological disorders (Parkinson, Alzheimer's) cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This program will address the critical shortages in science teachers in Florida public schools, especially at the high school level. Participants in the workforce program will intern and train in active laboratory settings, as well as teacher training courses in the sciences through UF's College of Education. The Regenerative Medicine initiative at the University of Florida is a multidisciplinary program that involves faculty from seven Colleges (Medicine, Engineering, Health Professions, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dentistry, Veterinary, and Education) and sixteen Departments of the University of Florida. This team of experts will work together to develop novel stem cell based therapies that also meet the ethical and moral considerations of citizens. This unique multi-disciplinary team represents a unique opportunity for Florida.
