| Project Description: |
| Increased funding will allow the scientists at the McKnight Brain Institute to further develop and expand the program called "Translate PD", the purpose of which is to bring promising therapies within this decade into clinical trials that will alleviate the devastating effects of Parkinson's and drastically reduce health care costs. MBI scientists are recognized internationally as having some of the key discoveries that could be translated to very near future cell and molecular therapeutics that not only treat the symptoms but also potentially cure the disease itself through adult stem cell biology, viral vectors and stereotaxic surgery. Parkinson's Disease afflicts more than 1.5 million men and women in the U.S. with over 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year. This disease is unique in that its incidence increases by the decade. This increase means that in the near future, Florida, being one of the largest and fastest growing states with one of the largest elderly population (17.6% of Florida's population is over 65), will likely have one of the largest concentration of PD patients in the U.S., which translates into huge health care costs for Florida. |
