Project Title: Florida Fund for Minority Teachers Date Submitted 1/11/2006 11:03:22 AM

Sponsors: Bullard

Fully funding the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers (FFMT) will allow the maximum number of scholarships, as mandated by Chapter 1009.605(2) F.S., to be awarded to minority education students across the state. This will further allow the FFMT to meet its mission to increase the number of minority teachers in Florida to better reflect the state's diverse population.

Project Description:
The project will allow the FFMT to award 350 new scholarships of $4000 each to college juniors who fit the eligibility criteria, and also allow the FFMT to renew 350 scholarships of $4000 each to college seniors who have maintained the required GPA and completed all other requirements for renewal. The project will also allow the FFMT to conduct its annual Recruitment and Retention Conference, as mandated in Chapter 1009.605(3)(g) F.S.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Fully funding this project will permit the FFMT to award the maximum number of scholarships across the state, allowing the FFMT to further meet its goal of increasing the number of minority teachers in Florida to better reflect the state's diverse population, as well as decreasing the ratio of minority students to minority teachers. Fully funding the project will also allow the Department of Education to retain more teachers since a condition of the scholarship is that the student must remain a teacher in Florida public schools for the same amount of time that they receive the scholarship. The project will also allow the FFMT to carry out its annual Recruitment and Retention Conference, designed to complement the teaching skills obtained by the scholarship recipients in school.
