In many cases, the first stop for immigrants entering Florida is the Miami-Dade area. Through this program, Hispanic speaking individuals receive residential substance abuse treatment to become productive citizens of throughout the state of Florida.

Project Description:
We are requesting funding to enable us to enhance Companeros en Recuperacion, a residential substance abuse treatment program for Hispanic women who do not speak English. These women suffer from addiction, abuse and, in many instances, mental illness. Services will provide culturally competent treatment including NIDA's Community Based Outreach Model as well as Motivational Enhancement Therapy. Services also will include assessments, treatment planning, family therapy using NIDA's Strengthening Families Program, individual counseling, evaluation and psychotropic medication, group therapy, skills building workshops, addiction workshops, parenting workshops, basic medical care, and case management. Moreover, patients will receive English as a second language and vocational skills in addition to the comprehensive services described above.

This program is the only one of its kind in Miami-Dade County. The current program is a model program within the U.S. and its 85% completion rate is one of the highest completion rates in the State of Florida for substance abuse treatment programs.
