The Sunland Hospital property was abandoned over 20 years ago. The vacant property sits in a state of disrepair and needs to be demolished from a safety perspective. It is filled with asbestos and was formerly a TB hospital. As part of the eminent domain for Blairstone Road, the City entered in to a contract with the State (the Seller). The contract required the City to request a budget appropriation from the legislature for the demolition of the hospital. The request is made to satisfy the contractual commitment. Furthermore, the funds from the surplus of the Sunland Hospital property are designated to be given to the Department of Children and Family to assist with their budgetary shortfalls, which are needed for the protection of children and families in this state. This funding would fulfill the goal of the Department of Environmental Protection in its efforts to attain the highest value for the property and comply with the representations made in the advertisement of the sale of the property to the public. The State has advertised the property with all documents and commitments made that affect the valuation. The property has been advertised for sale to the public four times. Each time either no bid was received or the successful bidder did not close due to severe economic issues associated with development of the site, including the demolition and removal of environmental contamination. The current bidder has relied on this representation of funding as part of is evaluation of the purchase price. |
