Project Title: Elder Affairs Coordinator Date Submitted 1/13/2006 1:49:17 PM

Sponsors: Atwater

Statewide Interest:
This request provides for a pilot project of four coordinators for senior services that will act as a liaison between seniors and the services that the community has available. This coordinator would also be responsible for ensuring that their local elderly community is prepared and that services are provided in an emergency. This will allow for local involvement and self-empowerment for many seniors. This appropriation for four coordinators would be split four equal ways between two municipalities and two faith based organizations in Broward County.

Project Description:
The Elder Affairs Coordinator project provides for a liaison between seniors, the local municipality, and the services that the community has available. The coordinator will make decisions to help meet unmet needs in the community, such as programs that draw isolated seniors out of homes to interact with neighbors and create a cohesive community that "ages in place." The coordinator will recruit and train volunteers for respite, transportation, meals and a "neighbor helping neighbor" program. They would also help organize volunteers and distribute supplies and information during an emergency or natural disaster. Senior volunteer "block ambassadors" encourages creation of community and empowers seniors to help one another.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? Yes
If yes, which declared disaster? Hurricane Wilma
If yes, which year? 2005

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
The coordinator will address the unmet needs of seniors and the waiting list for community services. They will have plans to ensure that the community's needs are met during a state of emergency. Through a "neighbor helping neighbor" volunteer model the community is able to establish and implement informal services and resources to assist seniors of the community that allow them to "age in place". Another outcome is the development of a system of "indigenous" (within the community) volunteer senior residents to help access outside community services from existing providers. A third outcome is to address the unmet needs of seniors and the waiting list for community services by an elder affairs coordinator.
