Project Description:
The HANDS program currently serves approximately 1125 students ranging from Elementary and Secondary Schools in a tri-county area. The program, which is run by the South Florida Sports League (SFSL), a 501 (c)(3), teaches at-risk youths how to incorporate seven essential elements into their lives in order to be a healthy, productive, and successful member of society. HANDS teaches the kids to make the right choices when confronted with issues such as drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, as well teaching them how to eat more healthfully and how to study better. The program has had a great deal of success and is now planning to expand significantly. This coming year, the program hopes to serve almost 3,000 kids; 1,875 elementary and middle school kids from August to February and 1,125 high school kids from March to July. Now that the program is expanding both the number of participants it accepts and the number of programs it provides, the SFSL is in need of funding from the State to match the private and public monies it currently receives.
