Statewide Interest: |
The proposed project is meant to improve ocean education and outreach across the State and will benefit all of its citizens through a combined formal and informal approach. Florida relies heavily on its oceans and coasts for economic revenue, high property values, jobs, recreation, resources, and more. Public understanding, an informed and adequate ocean workforce, and the ability of citizens to make informed decisions is essential if the State is to solve the serious issues it now faces with regard to its oceans and coasts. Well-planned, effective, and enhanced ocean education efforts are essential and will also help to improve math and science achievement in Florida's schools. |

Project Description: |
The proposed project entails planning to implement a statewide strategy to enhance ocean education and outreach via two approaches nationally identified as highly effective and highly needed. A workshop with extensive follow up will be done to determine the feasibility of and a strategy to create a virtual oceans teacher training institute that can interface with existing, credible programs and provide sustainable funding for professional development for K-12 teachers, helping to improve math and science achievement in Florida. In addition, planning will be conducted to examine how and what is needed to create an effective statewide ocean outreach campaign that focuses on the importance of the ocean to Florida and specifically incorporates information being gained on the links to the economy, jobs, public health, security, and natural resources. |

Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
The proposed project will produce two strategies to enhance ocean education in Florida. The strategies will include needs, identification of existing resources, costs, and a plan for implementation. In addition, the process of planning for both a virtual oceans teacher training institute and ocean outreach campaign for Florida will strengthen statewide collaboration of marine experts, communicators, educators, and through interaction enhance existing efforts while identifying potential outside sources of funding and expertise. |
