Project Title: Mental Health Community Housing Program/Miami-Dade Capital Outlay Date Submitted 1/13/2006 9:37:27 AM

Sponsors: Garcia

Statewide Interest:
As stated in the Department of Children and Families Florida Strategic Plan for Supportive Housing for Persons with Mental Illness, supportive housing for persons with mental illness is nationally recognized as an essential service for delivering care to persons in integrated community based settings. An expansion of supportive housing is being promoted in the state of Florida and across the country, even ranking as a high priority in the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health. By providing a structured psychosocial rehabilitation program, Fellowship House assists adults with mental illness to strive towards rehabilitation and recovery. Programs such as ours contribute to the overall betterment of our local community by improving the quality of life of some of its most underserved inhabitants. Specifically, the Community Housing Program is an acclaimed program providing supportive housing opportunities and safe, viable living alternatives to our clients.

Project Description:
Fellowship House houses over 130 individuals experiencing the effects of mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse disorders within its residential program. The program, structured as a continuum of services based on ability, assists residents to live in a community integrated setting. These clients are proud, accomplished individuals who strive towards their recovery on a daily basis. Fellowship House is requesting $600,000 to renovate existing residential facilities and purchase needed equipment, furniture and other necessary items for daily life. One of the staple elements of Community Housing is the Agency's provision of the most homelike atmosphere possible. Many of our residences were furnished through donations since the inception of the program years ago. The renovation of these facilities and acquisition of new furniture and supplies will allow us to continue to promote the high standards we uphold for our residences.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
By enhancing the Community Housing Program, Fellowship House can continue to serve its 131 clients in the most efficacious way possible. The completed renovation of our agency owned residential buildings will serve as the first measurable outcome. Purchased equipment, furniture, kitchen supplies and effects for daily living will encompass another achieved outcome. Allotted funds will allow us to maintain clean, safe and decent facilities for our clients for many years to come.
