Project Description:
Miami Children's Hospital is currently operating without a stable and reliable emergency power system to use in a crisis situation. In addition to being outdated, the current system is decentralized and provides little redundancy. The project would include the installation of two 2,000 kilowatt bi-fuel reciprocating engine generators with paralleling and synchronizing switchgear. The existing equipment and switchgear is outdated and as of the time of LMS publication was ready to fail. The generators did fail during Hurricane Wilma and left the hospital without power for several hours during Hurricane Katrina until portable generators could be brought in. The hospital is in the process of spendng $250,000.00 for the immediate but temporary repair and/or replacement of emergency switchgear. The permanent replacement of generators is part of a $15,000,000.00 planned effort to replace the facility's aging Central Energy Plant. As the only children's hospital in South Florida, Miami Children's Hospital needs to be able to cope in a true disaster and maintain its superior level of service and care. To do so, they need an up-to-date emergency power system with generators that can power the hospital and equipment inside in case there is a power outage.
