The Mustard Seed Shelter for Homeless Families with Children

Requester: Doug Leonard Organization: WestCare Florida

Project Title: The Mustard Seed Shelter for Homeless Families with Children Date Submitted 1/13/2006 3:04:01 PM

Sponsors: Sebesta

Statewide Interest:
WestCare Florida's Mustard Seed Inn has been serving the Tampa Bay region for 19 years, providing transitional housing and work programs for homeless men and women on the path to self-sufficiency. In addition, The Mustard Seed has provided the Bay Area with a valuable, cost-effective resource for combating the problems caused by the homeless that challenge some of Florida's warm-weather cities, such as increased encounters with law enforcement/civil courts, over-utilization of emergency rooms and indigent medical resources, and disruption of economic efforts of local merchants and businesses. The problem of homelessless has been greatly exacerbated in recent years as a result of the recent series of hurricanes and placed an added burden on the State's available affordable housing stock and homeless shelters. The proposed project seeks to provide special assistance to a highly vulnerable segment of this population by providing 24 units of housing for homelss families with children.
