Project Description:
The Dimensions Family Club was started in 1999. The purpose of the organization was to provide community-based activities for families of special needs individuals. It was difficult, often impossible for families with special needs individuals to participate in common facility-based activities due to the issues of the child. Often these special individuals present issues such as waiting in line, sitting quietly, adapting to new environments, sensitivities to loud sounds, felling overwhelmed by large crowds, etc. Often attempts at participation in traditional activities are unsuccessful, leaving parents feeling frustrated, embarrassed and overwhelmed. Arrangements are made to have special accommodations offered at each venue such as movies, bowling, and zoo trips to make the experience more acceptable by the individual with special needs. Due to the requests of many families, the Dimensions Club will expand to other counties. It is a simple plan and a service that is greatly beneficial for these special families in Florida.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Individuals with Special Needs and their families will be able to participate more fully in community activities due to the fact that there will be modifications made in the environment where the activities will be situated. Often, special needs individuals are unable to participate in regular community-based activities. In addition, more families will be able to participate if the costs for the activities are covered. Also, individuals with special needs and their families will feel more comfortable in an environment where they have others in the same situation to relate to.
