FIU Colombian Studies Institute's Project on Colombian-Florida Transnational Ties

Requester: Dr. Eduardo Gamarra Organization: Colombian Studies Institute, FIU

Project Title: FIU Colombian Studies Institute's Project on Colombian-Florida Transnational Ties Date Submitted 1/4/2006 12:11:09 PM

Sponsors: Rich

Statewide Interest:
The project addresses migration, bilateral trade, and drug trafficking. Florida's public services (education, transportation, health care, etc.) are directly impacted by the large flux of Colombians migrating into the state. Learning about Colombian migrants' demographic characteristics, economic behavior and attitudes will facilitate better planning and rationalization of resources. Colombian businesses and trade benefit the state of Florida at large and a precise measuring of them and their impact shall assist Florida's policy makers and planners. Finally, drug trafficking from Colombia impacts Florida in negative ways. Knowing whether or not Colombians are effectively policing activities like money laundering shall facilitate requests by Florida policy makers for more strict enforcement of Colombia's available legislation and/or changes of current norms.
