Project Description: |
The project is to significantly expand the programs of benefit to persons with intellectual disabilities, on a statewide basis. The proven Healthy Athletes programs, successfully conducted, will be significantly expanded through this investment. These programs include vision, dental, hearing, and fitness screenings. The program relies heavily on volunteer professionals and provides training for professionals and para-professionals in the proper care of, and specialized techniques of care for, people with intellectual disabilities. The Athlete Leadership Programs (ALPs) are multifaceted direct services programs designed to teach the individual involved to become self-advocates and to fully participate, with their families,in the community. Included in the training are programs for speech, governance, and program advocacy training. Finally, the project will provide direct support to start new county programs and to expand services in existing programs, with a priority to benefit those county programs most affected by the hurricanes of 2004. |
