Healthy Minds/Healthy Kids: Summer Camp for Abused Children

Requester: James D. Clark, LCSW Organization: Daniel Memorial, Inc.

Project Title: Healthy Minds/Healthy Kids: Summer Camp for Abused Children Date Submitted 1/6/2006 12:41:17 PM

Sponsors: Hill

Statewide Interest:
Daniel Memorial, Inc. (Daniel) has been serving the needs of abused children for 122 years. As the State's premier provider of services to abused children & their families, daniel, through it's Foster Care Program(s) served over 400 children last year. Focused on ensuring a continuum of comprehensive services for it's children, Daniel seeks to provide a summer camp experience. In addition to the children directly served by Daniel, the Healthy Minds, Healthy Kids Summer Camp will serve as a statewide model for providing a positive, healthy summer experience for foster care children. Research has long supported the benefits of summer camp as a positive outlet for kids & teens to experience that provides an appropriate & healthy activity, a positive impact upon an child's life, a time to flourish outside of the home. And, while abused children often do not fit into the traditional summer camps, children who are and have been abused, abandoned (physically, mentally & emotionally) can and do experience dramatic changes in their behavior, their attitudes & their motivation. Additionally, the summer camp experience will provide the respite needed by foster parents-time away to rejuvenate & revitalize the energies necessary to parenting & critical to foster parenting.

Project Description:
Daniel enjoys its reputation and recognition as an innovator of programs & technologies that meet the needs of area neglected & abused children. Consider, daniel's Independent Living Assessment program has been adopted internationally; our Statewide Inpatient Psychiatric Program (SIIP) is the model for the State of Florida; Our Adoption Information Hotline has gone from 165 call during our first year to more than 10,000 calls annually; &, the Early Delinquency Intervention Program (EDIP) program has been duplicated throughout Pinellas & Pasco Counties. Continuing its commitment to serve all of the needs of abused & neglected children, Daniel seeks to develop & establish a summer camp for foster care children & youth. Funds for this project will provide a summer camp for abused & neglected children. The camp will operate using a low staff to child ratio, one adult for every five children. Camp staff will be trained in managing behaviorally challenged children and its schedule will be structured to positively impact their individual development. Additionally, to ensure academic continuity through the summer, Daniel's summer camp will utilize teachers who will work with camp children individually & in small groups on specific educational goals, based on identified need.
