Project Description:
The community's stormwater management system consists of more than 160 acres of interconnected lakes and canals discharging into the SFWMD's North New River Canal. The water quality and discharge rates are controlled by two storm water pump stations on the northern boundary of the community. Since the original construction of the stormwater management system in the 1970's, little has been done to upgrade the existing facilities. The pumps and engines, although functional, are from the original construction, exposed to the weather, and would most likely not survive a significant storm event when they are most needed. The sheet piling along the lake bank has been kicked out and is no longer stable. The above ground diesel fuel tanks do not meet the latest code requirements. Some of the culverts are damaged and experience siltation. The City of Weston has performed an extensive modeling of the water management system in preparation of renovations to include new pumps with redundancy and housed in hardened, enclosures, new sheet piling, a fuel system meeting current environmental permitting requirements, and culvert repairs and replacements to promote equalization of the lakes during storm events.
