Statewide Interest:
1) Helping students to improve their FCAT scores through after school educational services provided to them, and 2) improving family's literacy so parents will in turn be able to help their children improve their reading skills and comprehension. Improved reading skills are necessary and crticial to understanding all subject areas.

Project Description:
Students: academic skills building, especially reading and literacy skills; tutoring assistance with homework; and after school socialization in a healthy and safe enviroment. Parents: parental literacy skills, including adult education opportunities at Daytona Beach Community College (at no charge) such as Types and Learning Styles Curriculum, Learning Activity Packages curriculum, and GED; general education development; job development activities; and family life skills training. Students and Parents: The program will emphasize parent and child reading activity and computer skills development at the Bethune Learning Center. 65-70 percent high-risk youth in 35 families will be served during a one year period.

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
In the Family Literacy Program, students will improve their literacy skills and educational performance, and parents will increase their involvment in their children's education and literacy activities. Parents will also be encouraged and empowered to complete post-secondary education, participate in training, participate in unsubsidized employment or seek career advancement. More specifically, atleast 85% of the students will improve their academic performance; atleast 65% of the students will increase their FCAT scrores; atleast 65% of the children will have a parent participate in the Family Literacy Program; and at least 50% of the parents who participate in the Family Literacy Program will enhance their ability to be self-sufficient.
