CBIRS Request 815

Community Budget Issue Requests - Tracking Id #815
Lake Mary Senior Center

Requester: John Litton, City Manager Organization: City of Lake Mary

Project Title: Lake Mary Senior Center Date Submitted 1/9/2006 12:38:30 PM

Sponsors: Baker

Statewide Interest:
Senior Citizens are one of Florida and Seminole County's most precious resources. There is a significant deficiency in both the number of centers and related programs to support the growing senior population of Lake Mary and surrounding areas. The City of Lake Mary constructed a new municipal services complex, which opened in March 2005 and dedicated some 4000 square feet of that facility to the seniors for their various programs and activities. The City is also funding annual operation costs of that space which comes to $55,000, excluding paid staffing. Already, attendance and programs have expanded beyond capacity of the 150 hours donated per week by volunteer coordinators and the limited oversight provided by the Lake Mary Elder Affairs Commission. The ability to provide additional requested programs and other activities would be limited without paid staff to develop and organize them. By funding an administrator and other part time staff, the State of Florida will help this facility to expand its services and enable seniors to remain active and independent; hopefully living at home or with relatives as opposed to having to depend on congregated nursing facilities. This is a one time request. John Litton, Lake Mary City Manager, intends to include funding for this position in the FY 2007 Lake Mary budget.

Project Description:
The funding of a coordinator for the Lake Mary Senior Center will enable consistent management of seniors' activities and programs, thereby achieving senior independence. Services include, but are not limited to, health and informational fairs, physical activity (Tai Chi, line dancing), mental stimulation and social interaction (computer classes, crafts, cards and games), counseling (grief), community involvement (Project LINUS, Charlie Crist's "Seniors vs. Crime", the Florida Department of Elder Affairs " Communities for a Lifetime", Lake Mary Police Department's Combat Auto Theft Program (CAT), and "Bears on Patrol"). Additionally, through numerous craft classes, these seniors make stuffed toys for underprivileged children, hats for cancer patients, and they donate to local hospitals, rehab centers and other similar facilities. On December 1st, 2005, the Lake Mary City Commission unanimously adopted Resolution #753 supporting $60,000 in funding as a State of Florida Community Budget Issue which among other things supports the "Communities for a Lifetime", which is a part of the Florida Department of Elder Affairs.
