Project Description: |
Highland Village is a residential mobile home park in the City of North Miami beach and is adjacent to the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and the Oleta River State Recreation Area. Highland Village is a low-income neighborhoos located between NE 20th Ave-NE 25th Ave. and NE 135th Ter.-NE 137th St. In 1999, the City employed an outside engineeringconsultant to prepare a Water Quality Evaluation Study (Study)to asses the problem at Highland Village. The study included a specific water-sampling scheme whereby water samples were collected from teh underlying aquifer and adjacent surface waters. The result was expected: surface water quality standards were exceeded at all sampling locations. Total fecal coliform bacteria counts were highest at stormwater outfall locations that discharge into Arch Creek and the adjacent Oleta River State Rec. Area. In order to solve the problem, the construction of a new wastewater collection system and the cleaning and abandonment of the existing septic systems currently used tohandle wastewater will be neccesary. The new wastewater collection system will prevent further contamination of the area sediments, groundwater and surface bodies by eliminating the septic systems, one of the sources of contaminants. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Decrease contaminant loading from urban stormwater runoff; and, lower fecal coliform bacteria counts within the surrounding surface waters to within surface quality limits(1000/100ml); and, prevent further pollution of the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve, and to satisfy the SFWMD SWIM Plan for Biscayne Bay. |
