Statewide Interest: |
Florida's history is of statewide importance, from the Panhandle to the Gulf Coast, the Keys to the entire East Coast. Very little is known about the shipwrecks in Tampa Bay, while there is more information about the East Coast shipwreck trail. Findings and discoveries all have statewide relevance. |

Project Description: |
The Florida Aquarium has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Bureau of Archaeological Research, a division of Florida Department of State's Division of Historical Resources, to participate in underwater archaeological investigations as the State's official Gulf Coast Underwater Archaeology First-Response Team. The Aquarium is also working with The University of Miami to continue an ongoing excavation effort at Little Salt Springs in Sarasota County. Significant archaeological finds have already been uncovered at this unique site. There is insufficient funding to meet the demands of a project with significant statewide relevance. Funding is needed in order to be able to complete underwater archaeological investigations. |
