Statewide Interest: |
The Florida Board of Governors has proposed that its universities expand the degrees awarded in priority areas for the state, which include science, engineering, health sciences and education - especially in the science teaching areas. With three major new buildings in the Life Sciences, FIU has now addressed the laboratory capacity problem and is requesting funding to provide the faculty and support for a significant expansion of its science training programs. |

Project Description: |
This investment in state funding will enable FIU to significantly expand its ability to prepare minority students for research careers and employment opportunities in the state-critical areas of life, health, and biomedical sciences and provide a base for continued growth through external grant support in these areas. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Through this proposal, the university will support an additional 50 undergraduates and 10 graduate students per year in the areas of the life, health, biomedical sciences and engineering programs. In addition to the increased output of degrees, the research in these areas is highly fundable by federal agencies and is expected to generate a three-fold return in federal grant dollars on the state's investment. |
