Statewide Interest: |
Throughout the State of Florida, and particularly Miami-Dade County, the community has become increasingly concerned about the outcomes for youth aging out of foster care because as many leave the system abruptly at 18, 1.) Few have no plans to pursue education or a career, 2.) Few have housing and independent living skills, which bolster rates of homelessness, and many end up unemployed and trouble with the law often result. In accordance with Chapter 216.052(1) and pursuant to Chapter 409.1451 of the Florida Statutes, via the Project A.C.C.E.S.S. Program, CMB Visions Youth and Family Service Programs will provide independent living and transition services to enable older children in foster care and young adults who exit foster care at age 18 to successfully transition to self-sufficiency as adults. The goals of the Project A.C.C.E.S.S Program are to assist older youth in foster care and young adults formerly in foster care to obtain life skills and education for independent living and employment, and to have a quality of life appropriate for their age while assuming personal responsibility for becoming self-sufficient adults. Services are also extended , as a front end diversionary measure, to older youth who come to the attention of the Child Welfare System via reports to the Child Abuse Hotline, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice , Schools and other child welfare agencies. Project A.C.C.E.S.S. also benefits our community by providing mentoring, employment opportunities, assistance with employment and educational training, as well as needed assistance with food, clothing and shelter. Direct services continue through youths 23rd birthday. |
