Requester: Miriam Ross, Executive Directo Organization: Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida

Project Title: Southwest Florida Holocaust Education and Teacher Training Initiative Date Submitted 12/19/2007 2:00:05 PM

Sponsors: Saunders

Statewide Interest:
Compliance with Florida Statute 1003.42 which mandates Holocaust Education in Florida public schools. The broader statewide interest includes the prevention of hate crimes and fulfillment of the mandate to teach the history of the Holocaust and related genocides by reaching primarily middle- and high-school students in Collier County. By reaching these individuals early in their formation, we show that individuals can make a difference by their own understanding and actions toward others.

Project Description:
A Southwest Florida Holocaust Education and Teacher Training Initiative will be undertaken by the Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida. The following educational programs, improvements and initiatives are proposed for the next fiscal year: A workshop for new teachers that includes a pre-prepared trunk of materials with workbooks, tools, and activities for teaching students about the Holocaust. A three part series of educational programs that will highlight a film and include discussion on a Holocaust related topic. One will be a survivors story, a liberators experience, and the tale of a hero who rescued individuals from death. Public Relations activities as it relates to the Boxcar project. This is an ongoing program that includes an exhibit about genocide and how the lessons from the Holocaust can be used to teach students about tolerance. The Boxcar itself will be available for viewing as a traveling exhibit and the advertising and pr campaign will inform the public where and when the Boxcar exhibit can be viewed. Continuation of the first annual Triumph Lecture and Award which will feature a major national or international speaker who triumphed over the adversities of the Holocaust or other genocides, or provided significant leadership, to make a major impact for good. An award will also be given to a Collier County citizen and student recommended by a teacher or mentor. Support for the financial logistic operations associated with developing and implementing a schedule for the Boxcar exhibit to be displayed at schools, libraries, and other public venues in Lee, Glades, Hendry, Collier, and Charlotte counties. Improvements to the museum computer system, website, audio archive and library systems to benefit student and teacher groups as well as other educators. -

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
We expect to see a major increase over and above the 5000 students and 2000 others we already reach through our programs in Collier County. We expect this will also translate into higher visibility for our work throughout southwest Florida, thereby further increasing the number of educated citizens
