Project Description: |
This request is for a comprehensive community-wide approach to helping families with young children with autism to become self sufficient in the care and support of their child.. Easter Seals proposes to work with families through the PLAY program approach. The PLAY (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) project is a homebased parent teaching program that is research based and is extremely cost effective. A trained professional teaches families appropriate strategies and interventions to elicit desired behaviors and development related to their young child with autism. This program gives families the ability to be independent in working with their child for life as opposed to depending on expensive outside professionals for years. The average cost of PLAY intervention is $4000 per year as compared to the $40,000 to $60,000 per year of most other intervention Funding required for the success of this endeavor includes comprehensive training for professional interventionists (nurses, therapists, social workers) in PLAY technique. Also included are salaries, travel, and developmental equipment for professionals to utilize with families. We strongly believe this is a cost effective approach to combating autism which will put our state in the fore front of autism treatment. If successful in the Tampa Bay community (which research suggests it will be), this approach could be developed statewide as a cost effective, proactive solution to combating autism in Florida. |
