Project Description:
The Mental Health Training Center would take the lead in meeting the state�s needs for the standardized, centralized and customized training and professional development of the mental health workforce. The goal of this Center would be - To build a skilled mental health workforce, including consumers and their families, that will work in local communities, key state agencies, and service organizations to implement efficient, appropriately applied, and evidence-based services that facilitate recovery and resiliency for persons with mental illness. Specific actions include: 1. Training for Competencies � Develop training programs designed around worker needs and mental health practitioner competencies and priorities. � Develop a standard training program for consumers and families to prepare them to serve as trainers. � Tap into federal/state resources and models to provide training that is responsive to current mental health research and transformation values. 2. Offering Comprehensive Training Programs � Promote and/or provide high-quality learning opportunities in accessible settings and formats. � Provide systematic, competency-based training programs for key mental health transformation topics, such as: 1) person-centering planning; 2) recovery support; 3) case management, etc. � Develop and provide targeted educational initiatives related to the implementation of specific evidence-based practices, such as Supportive Housing, Illness Management and Recovery, Family Psychoeducation, etc. � Develop and provide targeted, skill-building training for clinical supervisors to promote continuous improvement in the care delivered by mental health workers. � Provide training tailored for consumers and family members in a variety of areas, such as wellness, self-determination, advocacy, and public speaking. 3. Building Systems that Support Practitioner Development and Career Ladders � Promote credentials and competency-based training requirements for mental health practitioners. � Seek partnerships with colleges/universities and other education providers to meet mutual practice and training needs of both mental health practitioners and students. 4. Building Systems/ Organizations that Support the Use of Evidence-based Practices � Support and model the values of mental health transformation towards the achievement of a recovery-oriented service delivery system that is consumer and family driven. � Partner with Florida associations (Florida Substance Abuse and Mental Health Commission, Florida Council for Community Mental Health, NAMI) to foster uniformity of workforce development initiatives, and support/encourage quality changes. � Provide tools that increase an organization�s readiness to implement evidence-based practices and navigate complex change. � Serve as a technical resource to state agencies, community-based organizations, consumers and recovery organizations, and other public and private stakeholders. � Coordinate existing resources to focus on and leverage training for implementation efforts. 5. Disseminating Current Mental Health Practice Research. � Provide current and state-of-the art treatment practice information and resources through specialized publications, and website.

1. Number of mental health professionals, paraprofessionals, consumers and family members that receive specific training. 2. Satisfaction of mental health professionals, paraprofessionals, consumers and family members that receive specific training and their intent to use new skills. 3. Increased utilization of consumers and family members as partners in training teams. 4. Rates of increase of individuals certified at each level of certification. 5. Increased availability and accessibility of coursework for providers of mental health services. 6. Increased availability and accessibility of courses for consumers and family members. 7. Increased use of evidence-based mental health practices in Florida. 8. Utilization rates of website. 9. Number of publications produced to advance mental health services, including standardized curriculum materials.
