(2) Create cost-effective, sustainable, innovative pathways for responding to the challenge of a changing age demographic state- and nation-wide. (3) Maintain and re-vitalize the states image as an attractive destination for older adults, while strengthening communities and quality of life for all ages. (4) Distinguish Florida as a cutting edge center of research on aging and present opportunities related to such distinction.

Project Description:
The Institute would serve as a catalyst for the greater Sarasota region and a model for the nation as it focuses on ways to help individuals and communities take advantage of the growth and changing characteristics of our older population. It will explore how communities private, governmental and independent sectors transform to help deal more effectively with the increased older population of Sarasota and Florida and with the changing characteristics of a new generation of older adults. Projected products and services include an annual international convocation of experts, researchers and those who work to improve community; reports and research that informs policy, practitioners, and people with a projected initial focus on personal transitions planning, workforce development, and place-based programs; policy writing and advice; and initiatives and ventures that are initiated by the Institute and others that develop independently.

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
(1) Changes in public policy (local, state, national) that reflect the demographics of this community. Examples include land use and zoning regulations that allow for co-housing with shared space, development and support for life-long learning educational programs, and transportation options for older adults who can no longer drive. (2) Build community capacity to tap the valuable resources of its aging population and, simultaneously, meet older adults growing demand for meaningful opportunities to contribute and to their community and connect with others. (3) Change how this community builds the physical environment so that housing and community design would better reflect the aging population. Sarasota can become the bellwether for the nation in the application of Universal Design, multi-generational and multi-use development. (4) Develop the capacity of the Sarasota community to assist people as they plan their next chapter of post-retirement life. (5) Inform the nation about the issues, policy implications and infrastructure development necessary for the demographic shift that is ahead.
