Project Description:
This project will involve the care of 12-16 foster care children each month. The goal of the program is to provide a safe living environment specifically for youth who have been "bounced" around the system. The children served through this project are older children who are available for adoption but for whom there are no identified families. Currently Clay and Baker Counties are without any type of residential group care programs. If no appropriate foster home is available, children from Clay and Baker must be placed in one of two emergency shelter homes, or sent out of the county for a residential placement. Children from these two largely rural counties are often overwhelmed by placement in larger less rural cities. This Residential Project is to be located in area that is close to schools, parks, shopping, and health care. .In addition to being able to remain in one place, close to their home communities, these youth would be allowed opportunities to make friends, build relationships and experience the sense of belonging that is often missing from the lives of children in the foster care system. They would have the simple security of knowing where they will sleep each night until the right adoptive or foster family is located for them. This project will serve both boys and girls, and professional staff will be on site 24/7, to insure that the children are safe and that their needs are being met. Children coming into the program will receive a thorough assessment and will be provide with all medical, dental, psychological, and educational assessments as needed and required. Individual plans will be developed with each child served, so that early on the kids will have a chance to make their wants and needs known and so that they may take an active role in achieving their goals. The involvement of community stakeholders will be critical to the success of this program, and CBKN will work closely with the Health Dept., the School Board, local governments, the behavioral health providers, the foster parent associations, the Dept. of Children and Families ,and others to care for these kids. As we celebrate our adoptions, we must be mindful not to lose sight of the children in our care who, for whatever reason, wait longer for adoptive families.
