Project Description:
The Darrell Gwynn Foundation (DGF) is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2002 that aims to prevent, provide for, and ultimately cure, spinal cord injuries. A large part of the Foundations mission is increasing awareness about spinal cord injuries and how to prevent them, with a special emphasis on preventing those injuries in children. As part of meeting the Foundations goal of educating individuals, especially children, about spinal cord injury prevention, DGF, with the help of the Florida Legislature, the Department of Health, and the Department of Education, implemented the only prevention campaign of its kind, Florida Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week (FSCIAW). In 2007, the campaigns second year, FSCIAW took place on November 12-18th. In its second year, DGF was able to film a public service announcement featuring 2-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart along with former race car driver Darrell Gwynn. The PSA was seen throughout the state. In addition, DGF utilized its statewide speakers bureau, comprised of people who suffer from spinal cord injuries, to speak to students throughout the state. These speakers went to public high schools in four Florida counties (Miami-Dade, Broward, Orange and Hillsborough) to educate high school students on ways to prevent spinal cord injuries. DGF created educational prevention tip sheets specifically geared toward teenagers and they were distributed at these speaking engagements. DGF also created more general injury prevention tip sheets that were handed out across the state at rehab hospitals, sporting events and retail locations. DGF also had the support of the NASCAR drivers community, with each NASCAR Nextel Cup drivers car sporting a FSCIAW decal during the Ford Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Finally, DGF donated four (4) wheelchairs to children in need to help raise awareness for the campaign. Instead of focusing all of its education and outreach efforts during FSCIAW, the Foundation is now changing their efforts to a year-round educational program. Part of these activities will include, but not be limited to, a spinal cord injury prevention DVD for teenagers; a year-round speakers bureau that can speak to high schools, groups, etc about spinal cord injury prevention; and expanding the outreach of the injury prevention tip sheets
