Project Title: Enhancing Leadership Skills with Youth for Academic & Social Success Date Submitted 1/3/2008 5:05:34 PM

Sponsors: Hill

Statewide Interest:
Provide a program that will assist in Closing the Achievement Gap for at risk, low performing students and help to eliminate any potential barriers that can lead to a life of poverty. "Dr. Ruby Payne, noted educator, author, speaker, and business owner, analyzes in her research of over 30 years, how ones economic state, particularly someone living at or below the poverty level, can affect a persons learning, work habits, decision-making, and behavior." We will be using a successful L.E.A.D.E.R.S.model that has been presented with many educators, students, parents, community programs across this country and for several years at the National at Risk conference. ( Lead their own life well, Educate themselves to succeed, Avoid negative peer pressure, Define themselves positively, Examine all the facts before making decisions, Respect themselves and other people, Self-esteem is high)

Project Description:
This program is dual purposed in that it will build on an existing L.E.A.D.E.R.S.model where area students who have been struggling, or considered at risk by the local school system will be engaged in this leadership and character development program. It will be gender specific that will allow both males and females to work on their separate issues and feel comfortably in dealing with their own peers. And extra bonus to this program we will be offering a special leadership retreat during the summer for students that are leaving the 5th grade and now entering middle school and students leaving the 8th grade and now entering high school. It has been shown that these transitional times during their life can take a major toll on their self esteem and self image and for these reasons while attending this retreat they will be given tools and strategies to be more successful during their first year in middle and high school academically and socially. Another aspect of this program is that the program will utilize mentors and life coaches that will be hired to assist in providing this program to students attending this program. Each one of them will go through a train the trainers program to use the l.e.a.d.e.r.s. model effectively and also go through the Failure is Not an Option Mentoring program so that they are in line with our goals of closing the achievement and support the mission of our agency "to help give people a step up, not a handout and become self-sufficient individuals that are living a more prosperous and fulfilling life that serves as a positive role model for others in their families and their community."

Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? No

Measurable Outcome Anticipated:
Program is a proven model and is currently being used on a small scale with a select group of at risk students in the local school system. Barbie K. Reed is nationally recognized for this ground breaking research and program implementation will supervise the program. For the past two years she has been successful with many students in using this model and she is now ready to expand this program to include more students within in the community, provide more programs, provide retreats during the summer and train others in the model in order to reach more students who are struggling, or have been labeled as difficult to reach. In providing these services to the students it will help them focus more on setting positive goals, have better attitude about themselves and their future potential and help them to embrace new behaviors that will enhance their character development. Our goal is to further pilot this effective intervention program in several locations within the county and help more students to improve academically and socially. There will be a pre and post test to also measure the improvement in how they see themselves. By help to close the achievement gap with this group of young people it is our goal to give these students more tools to help them to break the generational poverty that may be apart of their background and offer them a brighter future with more opportunities to become more productive citizens and not a burden on our society in anyway or become just a number in the juvenile justice system or the penal system.
