Project Description:
Like all the EAA drainage basins which discharge into the Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs), lands in the Shawano Drainage District have been documented as a source of nutrient loads to the Everglades. Despite the implementation of voluntary best management practices which have significantly reduced phosphorus concentrations in downstream discharges, dramatic increases in upstream concentrations emanating from Lake Okeechobee have set back the State's ability to achieve it's goals of 10 ppb in discharges to the EPA. This request would permit the construction of an algal turf scrubbing system on lands controlled by property owners in the Shawano Drainage District to remove phosphorus from stormwater discharged from agricultural operations in the drainage basin.
