Statewide Interest: |
What statewide interest does this project address as it relates to Chapter 216.052(1)?
Keeping persons with Alzheimers SAFE in our community is a very important statewide interest. According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs are about 480,000 Floridians living with Alzheimers disease. Alzheimers disease affects an individuals sense of time, place, motion and direction. Wandering is a life-threatening behavior associated with Alzheimers disease and memory related disorders that results in the afflicted individuals becoming disoriented and wandering from their protective environment and becoming lost. The Alzheimers Association estimates that 60% of all persons living with Alzheimers disease will experience wandering during their illness and many will do so repeatedly. If a wanderer is not found within 24 hours, nearly 50% will suffer serious injury or death.
The Alzheimers Safe Return Act program trains law enforcement officers on communication tips, wandering, hurricane preparedness and response, shoplifting, indecent exposure, false reporting, victimization, homicide/suicide, and abuse/neglect. We work with a professor at the University of Florida to promote effective search techniques that will help minimize the time that the person with dementia is lost. As a result this program will not only save lives, but will also save law enforcement considerable time searching for a lost person, and saves the state money.
