Project Description: |
The 470-foot bridge on West Columbus Drive was constructed in 1926 and consists of eleven reinforced concrete girder approach spans and one steel pony-truss swing span. It carries two east bound and two west bound lanes of vehicular traffic with two sidewalks for bicycles and pedestrians. The bridge has a sufficiency rating of 14.6. Rehabilitation is urgently needed to correct functionally obsolete deck and bridge approach geometry that expose the public to hazardous traffic conditions. This bridge supports the Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) under development by FDOT, by leading traffic to designated intermodal centers (Amtrak Rail Station, Tampa International Airport and the Port of Tampa). Also, the Columbus Drive Bridge links users to regional activity centers and serves regional commerce activities and emergency services - law enforcement, fire rescue, and ambulatory vehicles. The bridge also provides a link to MacDill Air Force Base from the Downtown area. |
