Project Description: |
The communitys stormwater management system consists of more than 160 acres of interconnected lakes and canals discharging into the SFWMDs North New River Canal. The water quality and discharge rates are controlled by two storm water pump stations on the northern boundary of the community. Since the original construction of the stormwater management system in the 1970s, little has been done to upgrade the existing facilities. The pumps and engines, although functional, are from the original construction, exposed to the weather, and would most likely not survive a significant storm event when they are most needed. The sheet piling along the lake bank has been kicked out and may no longer be stable. The above ground diesel fuel tanks do not meet the latest code requirements and are an environmental threat. Some of the culverts are damaged and experience situation. The City of Weston has performed an extensive modeling of the water management system in preparation of renovations to include new pumps with redundancy and housed in hardened enclosures, new sheet piling, a fuel system meeting current environmental permitting requirements, and culvert repairs and replacement to promote equalization of the lakes during storm events. The completed project will provide an additional 50% of water quality for the basin. |
|
Is this a project related to a federal or state declared disaster? |
No |
|
Measurable Outcome Anticipated: |
Reduce a health hazard by reduction of pollutant loadings and suspended solid. Restore surface waters and provide an alternate irrigation water supply. The completed project will provide an additional 50% of water quality for the entire basin. |

Use of 160 acres of interconnected lakes, canals, and retention areas to retain the first 1-inches of runoff and allow the settling of the suspended solids and reduction of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and other contaminants, improving the water quality before discharge to the North New River Canal as controlled by two small bleeder pumps. |
