Project Description: |
With over 11 years of experience providing services to moderate risk youth committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice, Character House is the preeminent program in the state for young women and their babies. Pregnant youth enter the Character House where, in addition to addressing their criminal behavior and pursuing their education, they learn how to become mothers and , hopefully, break the cycle of crime while bonding with their newborn child. Collaborating with local service providers, including Healthy Mothers, Forty Carrots and the Sarasota County Health Department, Character House provides state of the art prenatal care and parenting education. Youth enter Character House while pregnant. They receive assessments in all areas, including academic, health, life skills, family issues, substance abuse and mental health. Individualized treatment within a therapeutic community addresses the needs of each young mother. Most programs for pregnant youth separate the mother from the baby. Character House has a long track record of excellence as evidenced by Quality Assurance visits, PAM scores, and low recidivism. The scope of this request is, primarily, to fund medical services and parenting education. Some of the partners mentioned above, who have traditionally provided these services free of cost to us, are no longer able to do so. |
